Our first mission is to put together a bit of a database for climbers who want to find out how to get to crags on public transport. If you have ever taken a bus or train or cycled to a crag in the UK / Europe (or anywhere else in the world), please tell us what route you took and we will log the route in the database. You can email us at ecoclimber@googlemail.com .
Gone will be the days of searching for the nearest parking space to our climbs. You can make a difference - drop us a quick email, or you can write a comment below, and we'll log it...
My favourites are:
Avignon (for Southern France): London to Lille Europe on the Eurostar (about 1.5 hours) and TGV from there directly to Avignon (about 4 hours). Lille is a smaller station and there are no complicated transfers through Paris.
Barcelona (for Catalunya): London to Paris on the Eurostar (2:15). Transfer from Gare du Nord to Gare d'Austerlitz (allow 20-30 mins). Overnight from Gare d'Austerlitz to Barcelona. It leaves at 9 or 10pm and arrives between 7 and 10 the next morning (depends on which option you take) You can either book on the direct 'trenhotel' (Elipsos), but if this is too expensive or booked up there are normal overnight TGV routes (TGV Lunea) that have couchettes. Book on www.sncf-voyages.com.
